The term political left is usually applied to describe a liberal or a Democrat. Traditionally a liberal was someone who believed in the civil rights of the individual. The political right however would be used to describe someone who was more conservative in their outlook on life. In case a hostile situation arose in the Middle East for instance, whereas the political left would be prepared to work with the UN and try to reach a peaceful settlement, the right would typically advocate an armed response especially if they thought the USA was in danger.
The political right was normally related to being American patriots.
Traditionally, the Republicans would have been seen to support the military plus its veterans, although it is debatable if that is still the case. They believed in an entrepreneurial spirit, after all this is the USA where anyone may become rich if they believe in their dreams. With the current financial downturn, there are a lot of people who believe that persons on the political right will likely support the capitalistic ideal at the expense of ordinary people's pensions and stock holdings.
